Reflection #13...Happy New Year

When I started writing these reflections, I thought I would be able to analyze how I did my new job each week. As a teacher, I would reflect on pretty much everything I did in the classroom and could write for hours on each week. As a supervisor, it is proving to be difficult to reflect as much. So much of what I do cannot be judged in short periods of time so even doing this monthly doesn't allow me to put much analysis in writing. The other problem with trying to blog about what I do is that a lot of things can't be shared publicly, so I have to reflect on those decisions and conversations in my head.

I know that I am learning a lot about working with teachers instead of students. I also feel I was pretty well-prepared for this job between my time managing a boardwalk restaurant, coaching youth/high school wrestling, and the leadership opportunities I was provided at Millville. One of my former bosses told me that 90% of his job was dealing with people and he was right on the money. Much like teaching a class of 25 students, a group/department of 25 teachers comes with a variety of personalities that need to be understood in order to get the most out of them.

I work with an awesome group of STEM teachers and I am really starting to see a payoff in the amount of time I spent trying to get to know them. I started mid-year evaluations before winter break and had some awesome conversations. I feel like the teachers were very open during our meetings and gave me some good feedback on what I have been doing. I have 19 more to go over the next few weeks and am excited to hear more. I think that after I finish those, I will be in a good spot to truly reflect on how I have done so far.
