Geno said it again...

About a year ago I wrote about Geno Auriemma. After winning his 10th national championship as the coach of the UConn women's basketball team he said "We have to work really, really hard to make this look easy." That really hit home with me because I felt the same way about my calculus students. Over the past four years, they have performed so well on AP exams that students now walk into AP classes in our school expecting success, not hoping for it. This year will be second year in a row that I will watch a group of seniors graduate that I have spent a lot of time with in multiple classes. These kids are like younger brothers and sisters to me that I have watched (and hopefully helped) grow up...I'm very mature! For the past 4 years, I have had a good chunk of my students returning from a previous class, and that has been a lot of fun. I was fortunate enough for 2 years in a row to have a group of seniors that have been with me for multiple classes and given me everything I asked of them. Coach Auriemma said in an interview before the regional championship game, "What can you say to a group of players that every time the bell rings, they answer it?" That is a really hard question to answer. These kids have responded to every challenge I put in front of them and blown them all away. I have received a lot of compliments on my kids accomplishments, but I haven't really done that much to deserve it. With these kids it's been pretty simple: explain what needs to be done, show them that you believe in them, and let them roll. I won't have many repeat kids next year, so I don't know when or if I will ever get a chance to experience this again. I do know that the past 4 years have been a lot of fun and my kids have answered a lot of bells. I guess the only thing I can say to them is,
Thanks of the ride,
Barber
